What Is Borehole Solarization?

Borehole solarization is the process of converting an existing borehole from diesel or grid-powered pumping to a fully solar-powered system. Instead of running a generator every time you need water — burning thousands of shillings in fuel each month — a solar borehole pump uses photovoltaic panels to power a high-head submersible pump directly from the sun.

The system works automatically: when the sun rises, the pump starts drawing water. When clouds pass or the sun sets, the system throttles down or stops. No fuel, no noise, no manual operation. Water is pumped into storage tanks where it is available on demand for irrigation, livestock, or domestic use.

SunPro has installed solar borehole systems across Kenya's driest and most productive agricultural counties. Our designs account for borehole depth, static water level, daily water requirements, and local solar insolation to deliver reliable, year-round water supply without recurring fuel costs.

Benefits of Solar Borehole Pumps

Why thousands of Kenyan farmers and homeowners are switching from diesel and grid to solar borehole pumping.

Eliminate Diesel Costs

Running a diesel generator for borehole pumping costs Ksh 30,000 to Ksh 80,000 per month depending on pump size and hours of operation. Solar eliminates this expense entirely. Your only cost after installation is occasional pump servicing — typically less than Ksh 5,000 per year. The savings pay for your solar system within 12 to 24 months.

Automatic Operation

No more waking up at 5 AM to start a generator or rushing home to switch it off. Solar pumps operate automatically from sunrise to sunset. Smart controllers manage pump speed based on available sunlight, protecting your pump from dry-running and delivering consistent water output throughout the day.

Low Maintenance

Solar panels have no moving parts and last 25+ years with minimal performance degradation. Solar pump controllers are solid-state electronics with no wear items. The submersible pump itself requires far less maintenance than a diesel engine — no oil changes, no filter replacements, no injector servicing.

Remote Monitoring via WhatsApp

Every SunPro solar borehole system can be equipped with remote monitoring. Receive real-time WhatsApp notifications about pump status, flow rates, tank levels, and system faults. Know exactly what your system is doing from anywhere in Kenya. No need to drive to the borehole just to check if the pump is running.

Environmentally Friendly

Solar borehole pumps produce zero carbon emissions. By eliminating diesel consumption, a single solarized borehole can prevent 5 to 15 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year — the equivalent of taking 2 to 4 cars off the road. Clean water, clean energy, and a healthier planet for future generations.

Energy Independence

No reliance on KPLC grid availability or diesel supply chains. Your borehole pumps water every sunny day regardless of what is happening with the national grid or fuel prices. In Kenya's agricultural regions, where grid power is often unavailable or unreliable, solar borehole pumping is the most dependable water solution.

Agricultural Regions We Serve

SunPro has installed solar borehole systems across Kenya's key agricultural regions. From the vast ranches of Kajiado to the coffee-growing highlands of Nyeri, our systems are powering irrigation, livestock watering, and domestic supply in some of the country's most productive farming areas.

Kajiado & Narok — Maasai ranchers and mixed farms rely on solar boreholes to water cattle, sheep, and goats across thousands of acres. Solar pumping has transformed these arid and semi-arid regions, enabling consistent water supply even through extended dry seasons.

Laikipia & Nakuru — Large-scale wheat, maize, and livestock farms in these regions use solar boreholes to supplement seasonal rainfall. Solar irrigation enables year-round crop production and reduces dependence on expensive diesel-powered pumping.

Machakos, Kitui & Meru — These semi-arid counties have seen a boom in solar borehole adoption. Solar pumps power drip irrigation for tomatoes, onions, and horticultural crops, as well as supplying water for poultry and dairy operations.

Nyeri & Embu — Coffee and tea farmers in the central highlands use solar borehole pumps to ensure consistent water supply for processing and irrigation. Solar pumping is particularly valuable during dry spells that can otherwise devastate cash crops.

Solar-powered irrigation is enabling year-round farming across Kenya. With climate patterns becoming less predictable, farmers who invest in solar boreholes gain a critical advantage — water security that is independent of rainfall, fuel prices, and grid electricity.

The Installation Process

From initial site survey to flowing water — our borehole solarization process is thorough, efficient, and completed in 2 to 3 days for most systems.

1

Site Survey

Our engineer visits your farm or property to assess the borehole location, available space for solar panels, sun exposure, and access for installation equipment. We also discuss your daily water requirements and any future expansion plans to ensure the system is sized correctly from the start.

2

Borehole Assessment

We measure the borehole's total depth, static water level, dynamic water level, and recovery rate. This data is critical for selecting the correct pump — one that delivers the required flow without drawing the water level below the pump intake or straining the aquifer.

3

Pump Sizing & Design

Based on the borehole data and daily water requirements, we select the optimal submersible pump, solar array size, and controller. Our designs account for pipe friction losses, elevation changes, and local solar insolation patterns to guarantee the system delivers the promised water volume.

4

Panel Mounting & Wiring

Solar panels are mounted on heavy-duty galvanized steel ground mounts or roof mounts, angled for optimum sun exposure. All wiring is run inside UV-resistant conduits. The pump controller and monitoring unit are installed in a weatherproof enclosure near the borehole.

5

Pump & Controller Installation

The submersible pump is carefully lowered into the borehole on stainless steel riser pipes. The pump controller is connected to the solar array and pump. All electrical connections are waterproofed and earth-bonded according to Kenyan electrical regulations.

6

Testing & Handover

We run the system through a full day of live testing: flow rate verification, pressure testing, dry-run protection checks, and remote monitoring configuration. Once everything is verified, we hand over the system with a complete walkthrough and connect you to our WhatsApp support channel.
